Two 52weekers in search of a gig, Oscar and I headed down to Zanzibar on Friday the 23rd to see Subrosa and another band playing. (Yes, we’re starting to hit a lot of repeat bands, which is disturbing, but often enjoyable as we get to experience one old and one new along the way. The first rule of 52weeks is, however, at least one new band.) The surprise band turned out to be Walt. We had no idea what to … Continue reading
16 June 2006 : Four great SA bands, three eager 52Weeks representatives, one fantastic venue. Blood Money, Running with Scissors, Subrosa and Epicure were playing at the Blues Room in Sandton. All the photos are up on Flickr. Blood Money were cool, Running with Scissors funky, Epicure was passionate, but Subrosa was the band we wanted to watch. On arriving on stage, one of the first things they did was announce who they were. I like this. Its a simple … Continue reading
Levi’s is doing great things with South African rock, and Sunday 4 June saw them hosting the inspirational, the magnificent, the drunken elephant radio controlled, the rocking Parlotones at the 88 Lounge in Norwood. So on Friday a whole group of 52Weekers (most attendees yet!) headed down to Zanzibar – the bar in Pretoria, not the country – to see what their rock line-up had in store. We were not disappointed. The two bands on the schedule were Soil 7t7 and the New Academics. The New Academics were overwrought with sameness, and so Soil 7t7 was the band for review. This three piece act, including borrowed drummer, really got the pub jamming. They intro’d … Continue reading
Tonight we’ll be watching Soil7t7 and New Academics at Zanzibar, in Faerie Glen, Pretoria. Virgin sonic territory. This Sunday 52 Weeks heads for The 88 Lounge in Norwood for a Levi’s Vintage Sunday with Greenacre and The Parlotones unplugged. Depending on next week’s plans, it might end up that only one of these artists gets the review. We’ll have to wait and see I guess.
