So on Friday a whole group of 52Weekers (most attendees yet!) headed down to Zanzibar - the bar in Pretoria, not the country - to see what their rock line-up had in store. We were not disappointed. The two bands on the schedule were Soil 7t7 and the New Academics. The New Academics were overwrought with sameness, and so Soil 7t7 was the band for review.
This three piece act, including borrowed drummer, really got the pub jamming. They intro’d with a funky sort of early Red Hot Chili Peppers sound, ala Freaky Styley, which immediately caught my attention. Initially the vocals seemed low in volume, but this was corrected either by my change in position, or by their sound engineer as the set progressed.
There’s some really good talent on display in this band. They have some great riffs and funky beats. Soil7t7’s music has X-factor written all over it. It’s a little special, a little unique, and very difficult to pigeonhole in a particular genre. Perhaps it is best to simply call it “South African”.
Moving on, their bass-driven rock brought with it sprinkles of Reggae in the mode of Bob Marley and Eddie Grant. Soil’s hit single “Woman” spent many weeks on TuksFM’s charts, mostly at number 1, and it’s easy to see why. They also had a number of awesome ballads, sung by both lead and bass guitarist whose voices in combination were brilliant. Judging from the reactions of the 52Weekers around me, I can easily assume that every single person watching Soil7t7’s gig enjoyed it thoroughly.
