About

Reviewing a South African band every week for 52 weeks. Let's see if we get the rock or the rock gets us...

Levi’s is doing great things with South African rock, and Sunday 4 June saw them hosting the inspirational, the magnificent, the drunken elephant radio controlled, the rocking Parlotones at the 88 Lounge in Norwood.
The gig was opened by an eclectic group of folk rockers known as Greenacre. They were really good too. And friendly. And composed of some of the members of the previous week’s Soil7t7 too!

You may notice a slight rambling in my review, a tendency to perhaps fill the gaps with useless extraneous information, and there is a reason for that. After reviewing and scribbling and watching and applauding and being creative in descriptions and taking some awesome photos, the evil arch-enemy of 52Weeks jumped in to steal my little yellow 52Weeks review book.
:( Oh how I miss it so. Fortunately I have a replacement now anyway.

More importantly: The band. What were the Parlotones like? Well, the best way to answer that is to announce I am the proud owner of a shiny new Parlotones Radiocontrolledrobot album. Owner that is, after running around to all the stores in Centurion and Boksburg only to discover it sold out everywhere. I love this album.

The set was acoustic in nature, which toned it down, but at the same time seemed to mature the brilliance thereof. Kahn’s voice is energetic, flowing, lingering, sweet, happy, sad, torn and anguished all at once. The anguish shines through in lines like “I no longer wish to fall in love”, “This is the saddest song you’ll ever hear” and “I’ve had enough… this begging pleading knees are bleeding I’m your radio controlled robot”.

Their music creeps through you like a vine engulfing your body inside and out, gut-wrenching its way through your stomach, slowly wrapping itself around your heartstrings and tugging at them, willing and aching at your emotions to unfold.

It is so sweet, so beautiful, so powerful.

Oh wow.

Oh wow.
