16 June 2006 : Four great SA bands, three eager 52Weeks representatives, one fantastic venue.
Blood Money, Running with Scissors, Subrosa and Epicure were playing at the Blues Room in Sandton.
All the photos are up on Flickr.
Blood Money were cool, Running with Scissors funky, Epicure was passionate, but Subrosa was the band we wanted to watch.
On arriving on stage, one of the first things they did was announce who they were. I like this. Its a simple thing that many bands fail to do. How can I buy your album if I don’t know who you are? Of course, repeating the band’s name after every song is overkill.

Subrosa is a heavy sound, but the vocalist has a powerful voice edged with angst that he belts out over the weighty bass guitar riffs. They also know how to work the crowd and get them moshing.
What they lack in style, they certainly make up for in onstage activity, the lead singer and lead guitarist praying to the rock gods “headbanging style” (a bit too often maybe), with the Wookie-esque bassist wirelessly roaming the dance floor. I think they could take a page or two out of Blood Money’s book when it comes to creating an onstage image.
Coupled with a Woodstock ticket give-away, they certainly motivated the small audience to really enjoy themselves.
Go see them. They’re well worth it.
It’s always the best bands that leave you with nothing to say…
