Many moons ago when 52Weeks was but a puppy aged two, we stumbled across a brief but thrilling intro to what appeared to be a legend in the making. We saw Scarlet Box open for Prime Circle. A mental note and a promise was made that this band would get their own week of the fifty-two.
Of course conveniently Scarlet Box then disappeared on tour all over the countryside, allowing memories to slowly fade (but never disappear) until suddenly opportunity fell into Shaun’s lap as he discovered the Levi’s Young Guns promotion while enjoying a Vintage Sunday. Right now we’re all feeling a lot of love for Levi’s work in the SA music industry.
The opportunity which came up was to attend an exclusive evening where a few of the young stars in the music industry would be playing for our viewing pleasure. Oh and viewing pleasure it was, but that *really* is an understatement.
You see, ballet is “viewing pleasure”. Cricket is “viewing pleasure”. The freakin zoo is “viewing pleasure”. This was something else.
Scarlet Box was big-bold-in-your-face-don’t-give-a-damn-rocking-passion-tearing-from-every-last-inch-of-your-body-wow. I’ll say it again. “Passion”. It earthquakes from the bottom of lead singer Jenna’s lungs, a transferred energy that rattles to the core of every musical sensation you possess, leaving you stunned, fingers-in-mouth and waiting for more.
If passion itself could play a guitar, that passion would be Scarlet Box.
It’s all-original power South African rock music.
To quote scribbled comments from the 52weeks notebook:
“Voice, what a voice, what a voice”
“sucks you in”
“like it’s their last performance before armageddon”
“Rock Rock Rock Wow”
“and they love it”
“9.8″
Deservedly, Scarlet Box earned themselves a standing ovation from the 52Weeks team.
I can’t wait to see them again. Scarlet Box is certainly a “disruption of the status quo”.
