Reviewing a South African band every week for 52 weeks. Let's see if we get the rock or the rock gets us...

217131859_8c1ed506a8_mWell, I think that’s quite enough media-wh0ring for Scarlet Box, which makes it time to kick back and relax to the subtle, snappy, folk rock stylings of Greenacre. (Disclaimer: I have a loose affiliation with this band through mutual friends) Greenacre have targeted a different genre of rock music, and seem to pull it off with216937001_333cfb4484_m great success.

The first appeal of this band is their unusual use of a frontman to warm the crowd up with a mini stand-up comedy routine and then introduce the band. It’s a unique and clever twist, and works pretty well.

The second novelty is the combination of three of the members’ vocal talents to build on a strong feel-good sound that well, feels better than Jack Johnson. Their tone is uplifting, not unhappy, and their message is one of playfule reminisce over their past, with songs like “Josie My Friend” as a tribute to Jose Cuervo tequila.

217132087_9dfda42963_mTheir performance is strong – experienced guitar work (you may even recognise members of a band called Soil7t7), upbeat fiddle/violin work (which unfortunately was missing at the gig at Tings, but cleverly replaced with Menage a Trois’ Celloist), the inevitable mouth organ, and smiles all around make for a pleasant experience in folk rock music.

The harmonising of three voices was superb, although friend Chris reckons they’re probably better after a few too many beers!217131603_10772b20d0_m

So if you’re looking to kick back, relax and enjoy some light rock music, be sure to check out Greenacre. You won’t be disappointed.
