Week #16: The Hellphones

DSC03782Bringing together a fusion of upbeat, energetic indie rock ‘n roll and cheeky, cryptic lyrics belted out by a distinctive gravelly voice, The Hellphones are the band of the moment. And a band for the future too.

Every single guitar note, drum beat and tambourine splash begs a response from your feet, and their live performance is nothing short of brilliant.

We were treated to The Hellphones at their CD launch at The Blues Room in two guises – that of the laid back, acoustic rockers and later that evening as the high energy, yellow-tied, electric funk speed rock ‘n roll junkies.

They never place a note wrong, their tunes are catchy, their style is a perfect accompaniment to their sound, and lead vocalist Tenn’s voice is something you can comfortably listen to for hours.

The Hellphones turned out to be a fantastically well polished act. They have great maturity in their execution but are youthful in sound. The closest band I’ve heard that comes near to pulling off what they do would have to be The Strokes, but where The Strokes lost creativity and direction The Hellphones are here to save you…

Funky rock ‘n roll. The more I listen, the more it gets me, and the bigger the smile on my face grows.

Get their album, put it in your stereo, and let it absorb you.
