The biggest reason that Down by the Water sounds like REM is the fact that Peter Buck is playing the very REMish guitar you hear in the background. Peter also plays guitar on the tracks Don’t Carry it All and Calamity Song.

Kanye samples Jackson, but Danger Mouse samples himself.
